AGE IN PLACE NEW HOME

The existing home reached the end of its life, making renovations impractical to meet modern standards, energy efficiency, and an Age-In-Place-friendly design.
Two brothers decided to build a new home for their parents, ensuring they could enjoy their retirement comfortably. The design prioritizes universal design and easy access, considering the rising cost of housing and the desire to invest in future benefits for their children and grandchildren seeking affordable options.
Budget constraints were a significant challenge, but the clients also prioritized high-quality materials, modern technology, and security systems.
The narrow and deep lot posed additional challenges. The main floor was designed to accommodate their parents’ needs, featuring two easily accessible bedrooms, a laundry room, a living and kitchen area facing the backyard, and a side ramp providing wheelchair access from either the rear or front. This ramp blends seamlessly into the landscape, enhancing visual appeal. The upper floor includes two bedrooms, two bathrooms, and an open space leading to the basement den. A sunken patio at the rear provides independent access to the basement, preserving its potential for future use.
As a General Contractor on this project, I had the opportunity to work with Susanne on this new home build in North Burnaby. From the beginning, I could see that Susanne was able to clearly communicate her design intent. She was involved with site visits ,and showed high care level to execute any changes to the design from the clients. In my opinion, Susanne is very professional and shows integrity in her projects.
